Caulk and paint over soft wood buys one season and costs you two. Every exterior we price gets probed first: sills, casings, rake boards, soffits and the bottom courses of clapboard. Anything that gives is cut out, the opening is checked for the water path that caused it, and new material goes in back-primed and sealed at every cut. Then it gets painted, because bare new wood fails faster than the piece it replaced.
